Educational Programs

We are often asked how we manage to support the animals that come through our doors.  The last couple years without a doubt have been quite tough, but we're still here!  One way we manage the financial burden is through educational programs.  We bring live animals, and various animal parts to your school, library, nature center, or even birthday parties!

What is offered in your educational programs?:

First and foremost a selection of 10-12 live reptiles and amphibians will make a trip to your classroom or other event. Students will have an opportunity to see these animals first hand, learn about them and even touch a few here and there.  It is a fact that at an early age, children that have an opportunity to have a positive first experience with animals will grow up to respect and appreciate them much more.  An educational program that uses live animals is an excellent way to give that perfect first impression.

What educational topics will be discussed?:

Beyond a little information on the individual animals, students will have an opportunity to learn the importance of these animals in the ecosystem, habitats, diets and their importance, locomotion, defense/hunting and safety.  Additionally, a brief mention about responsibility with pets is mentioned.

Beyond live animals, are any other materials/media used?:

In addition to live animals, we use display boards with photos to provide visual aid while explaining the material.  Additionally, an Alligator skull, shed snake skins and turtle scutes are also used to explain growth and development in reptiles.  All reptile body parts are sanitized to ensure the health and safety of the students.

If this is a private birthday event, instead of bringing display boards, we utilize live animals and various skulls, etc.  Most birthday events are for younger children and subsequently, we avoid the deep discussion and maintain a more fun atmosphere for the children's enjoyment.

Is there any risk of illness or injury to the children?:

Safety is our first and primary goal.  Any animal that has a history of aggression, are either not brought for the shows, or are kept at a distance from the children and are used as a “see but not touch” animal.  Students do have an opportunity to pet a live American Alligator, but the animal is physically restrained and the jaws are secured to prevent any possibility of biting.  Before students are allowed to touch any reptiles, it is required that their hands are cleaned with Purell Hand Sanitizer, which is provided at the beginning of the show.  After handling sessions are over, the Hand Sanitizer and then redistributed to ensure that the children’s hands are clean.  This is absolutely mandatory for all children under the ages of 18 that wish to touch the animals.  For Ohio health and safety guidelines, please click HERE.

How much do your educational programs cost?:

Special Notice

Due to the new laws written by the Ohio Department of health and safety, there are new changes to how educational programs can be performed at schools.

Unfortunately, educational programs in schools are unavailable to classrooms who have children under the ages of 5 years old, unless the program is being performed outdoors.

Additionally,

I have received quite a few emails wondering if venomous reptiles are displayed in the classrooms.  Venomous reptiles are not used in classrooms.  Additionally, this is also in violation of the Ohio Board of Health section 3701-54-07.

Within 25 miles of Zip code 43209, programs are $150.00 for the first hour with each additional hour being only $60.00.  If the program will be taking place at a destination greater than 25 miles, the same pricing is applied plus an extra $10.00 per additional 15 miles. Payment is due in CASH at the end of the program for private parties, etc. (Personal checks have been an issue.  We appreciate your understanding.) If this is a business, we do accept business checks at the end of the program.  No down payment will be necessary.
