Venomous Reptiles as "pets"?
On rare occasions, the Ohio Reptile Service has been contacted for the surrender and/or removal of a venomous snake. Some are easy to identify, such as rattlesnakes, or a cobra that is alarmed and has it's hood spread. Others, however, might not be easy to identify without a trained or experienced eye. They are all beautiful animals that come in various shapes, sizes and colors. Nearly all of them with the potential to deliver a fatal bite if 100% caution is not shown.

Why would someone wish to keep a venomous reptile in their private dwelling? The answer could possibly be a little different for everyone. Venomous reptiles have played a major factor in the passion that drives many to be a professional herpetologist. Their ability to keep them privately has simply intensified that drive. Others, only want a "cool" animal that they can use to boost their ego's. Unfortunately, the latter seem to be most frequent. The animals within their care often suffer due to the owner actually fearing the animal. Cages go without cleaning, feeding is rare for fear of opening the cage, etc.

What other concerns are there regarding the private possession of venomous reptiles? First and foremost is the risk of escape. They require solid housing, not aquariums. Lockable wooden/plastic structured enclosures that are escape proof. Locks should be on each and every individual cage. The enclosures themselves, should be placed in an escape proof private room that is also locked to prevent unwanted entry.
All venomous snake species behave and act differently. Each snake within a species will even behave a little more differently than the one before it. Housing, keeping and caring for venomous snakes require experience with a wide variety of non-venomous snakes to begin with. Experience handling snakes with hooks, tongs, etc. is also a requirement. Safe handling is of absolute importance. Failure to do so, could result in the loss of your life or someone else's.
