Reptiles in private households can sometimes cause a small issue for an unprepared police officer, fireman or paramedic. Most reptile encounters will be completely harmless and pose no threat. But what could cause a possible safety risk?
Encountering the animal shown above when entering someone's home could be of reasonable concern. While Alligators and other crocodilians typically would allow you safe passage provided that you left them alone, they can still pose a safety risk if you were to make a mistake that causes them to feel threatened. First step upon encountering an Alligator or other species of dangerous reptile, is simply backing away and providing it some space. They have no desire to have a confrontation with you.
After providing it some space, if necessary, provide some form of barrier between you and the animal or anywhere that you don't want the animal to enter or escape from. At that point, call the Ohio Reptile Service at 614-595-4966. We will come out as quickly as we can to secure the animal and allow your personnel to work as necessary. Provided that the individuals are NOT breaking local laws by owning such animal, it will have to remain in the home unless the animal will be left entirely alone without care (as in the owner will be incarcerated) or without expressed agreement by the owner themselves.
In no way should an untrained individual attempt to capture an animal that they are not familiar with. An untrained eye may not be able to tell that the snake is venomous and could suffer a bite. A bite, which if left untreated or not treated properly by the appropriate antivenom, could be fatal. Taking such a risk for the purpose of being "macho" in your job is NOT worth it. Please don't risk injury to yourself or the animal. Allow a professional to do the removal so you can continue doing your remarkable work by keeping the public safe.
